Disused Factory, Redhill

In Redhill there is an old, disused, factory which is named Fullers Earth Works. On the Redhill A25, the most successful quarry was operating at the time of its century and this quarry was the Copyhold Works of the Fuller’s Earth Union Ltd, which was established between1860-70. In 1954, the works had employed close to 800 men, were bought by a chemical company called Laporte Industries. After this purchase production was increased to meet the demands which were also increasing. In result of this a large factory consisting of kilns, silos and transit systems on several floors was built. In the 1980s, the Copyhold site was sending loose earths and packaged cat litter around the world.

In 1995 the company faced problems such as falling to make profit and in result of this it was announced that the company would close some of its 100 worldwide plants. The Copyhold works fell victim the following year and the Laporte Group was broken up and sold to an American private firm trading called Rockwood Holdings Inc. After the production lines were called off, the 119 acre pit was purchased for use as a landfill site by Biffa Waste Services and continues to take waste from across Surrey. The factory was for a while used as a waste transfer station but this too was abandoned at some time in around 2012 and the site is now derelict.
